NOAH

The tale of Noah is given the dark and gritty treatment courtesy of director Darren Aronofsky, starring Russell Crowe and Emma Watson

WHAT IS IT? Darren Aronofsky’s latest fi lm swaps ballet dancers, wrestlers and heroin addicts for a story that should be fairly familiar – one concerning the Lord Almighty and a pretty big fl ood. Russell Crowe stars in the titular

role of Noah, a man living in a brutal world inhabited by barbaric tribesmen and cannibals. He is haunted by visions of an epic fl ood that will destroy the world and goes to visit his grandfather to seek advice. Along the way Noah must deal with the barbarians and seek help from fallen angels, as well as survivors trying to escape the fl ood.

WHY SHOULD I STOCK THIS? Despite opening to criticism from religious groups for the depiction of the Biblical story, Noah was well received by fi lm critics, who praised the impressive visuals and gritty take on a familiar story. With all the noise surrounding the

fi lm’s religious themes, it is quite easy to forget some of the big names involved – Russell Crowe and Emma Watson star, supported by acting stalwarts such as Anthony Hopkins. Given the fl oods of stars on show,

it should come as no surprise that the fi lm grossed an impressive $359m (£210m) at the global box offi ce.

ANOTHER week, another movie featuring Aaron Paul. Based on the popular Nick Hornby

novel, A Long Way Down opens with Martin (Pierce Brosnan) contemplating suicide on New Year’s Eve when he is interrupted by like-minded Maureen (Toni Collette), Jess (Imogen Poots) and JJ (Paul). The group then pledge that they will wait until Valentine’s Day before ending their lives. The fi lm opened to negative

reviews but is a good means for Aaron Paul fans to get a further dose of the Breaking Bad star.
