Network Rail’s award-winning strategic freight corridor (SFC) initiative is a big step towards improving reliability and providing the data needed to focus investment where it will deliver the biggest benefits

hile the punctuality of passenger trains wins headlines, the punctuality of freight services is


equally important to the businesses across Britain that depend on them. And as those businesses are increasingly relying on ‘just-in-time’ logistics to keep themselves supplied, so Network Rail’s focus on freight is increasing.


The creation of the company’s award-winning strategic freight corridor (SFC) initiative is a big step towards improving reliability and providing the data needed to focus investment where it will deliver the biggest benefits. While most passenger operators are often geographically limited, freight operating companies (Foc’s) operate around 1,000 trains a day across the length and breadth of the network. Keeping track of where the delays that affect them occur and what can be done to make their journeys more reliable has historically been difficult to capture as the trains make their way across Network Rail routes and through different areas of responsibility. and Network Rail’s freight reform programme, the 21 strategic freight corridors were designed to allow the company to monitor the performance of a single freight service from origin to destination. The level of detail is such that investment can be targeted to increase overall speeds and reliability. The analysis also bridges traditional routes and tracks key flows, such as Southampton to West Midlands or Peak District to London traffic. For data analysis purposes, each corridor is broken into mini freight sections (MFS’s), divided by TRUST recording points. For example, MFS43 covers Bordesley Junction to Kingsbury Junction and its data is added to that of the other MFS’s on the route to gather an overall picture of performance. The data can be represented in a variety of ways, including ‘washing lines’ for each headcode – which compare the performance of the train with its timetable – to dashboards and corridor maps showing delay hotspots. Unsurprisingly, those hotspots are finding themselves increasingly becoming targets for investment, with notable new pieces
