reinforcement movements for the construction of Heathrow Terminal 5 and was involved in railhead operation for the project. It also provided design and operational input, plus construction logistics support, to Network Rail for the
creation of its new engineering delivery facility at Whitemoor in Cambridgeshire. With this experience of major projects, the company is keen to become involved in the logistics planning and construction of High Speed 2 and is also eyeing other
major construction projects such as the nuclear power station programme, where rail can potentially provide a cost- effective and environmentally friendly supply chain for construction materials. In the meantime, the provision of ground staff for shunting, examination and train preparation duties has been taken up by all seven Foc’s over the past few years, both for regular contracted assignments and ad hoc cover for leave, vacancies, sickness etc. Victa undertakes full training of such staff as well as regular competence assessments, all managed within a detailed safety management system based on industry best practice and regularly audited, both internally and by its train operating customer base. At the moment some eighteen staff are directly employed in these front line roles and the business is growing significantly, with recruitment of additional staff currently taking place. Victa also sees scope for extending this service to depot shunting and operations for passenger Toc’s.
A diverse client base
The experienced team used for training and assessment of the company’s staff also provide similar services to industrial customers with internal railway systems, such as Ford Motor Company, and several Foc’s. Advice on rail safety issues is also provided to these organisations and others in the rail/port/container terminal sector. A number of customers retain Victa to look after all aspects of their rail operations, including risk assessment, drawing up and reviewing methods of working, staff safety training etc., plus guiding them through the complexities of the licensing and access regime for private rail facilities. With its considerable experience and wide-range of contacts across the industry, ranging from Foc’s, Network Rail, the ORR, rolling stock and loco suppliers to key terminal operators and customers, the team is also called on by a diverse client base to advise on a wide-range of logistics, safety and rail operational matters, ranging from new freight facilities to the integration of rail into existing supply chains for companies considering modal switch. Independence from, but close relationships with, key industry players coupled with a very strong safety culture and a dedication to highly responsive customer service is providing the basis of significant expansion for the business.
