frozen scene using the concept of an abandoned ice workshop frozen in production. Polar bears and mannequins were suspended in resin blocks of ice among discarded tools and deserted work benches to create an eerie winter wonderland. Te scene was completed with two giant abstract Christmas trees flanking the store entrance, constructed from giant snow blocks and swathed in clear plastic. Across the pond New York’s iconic Bloomingdale’s department store on Lexington Avenue is known for its stunning displays which have previously included animation and interactive elements to help shoppers feel part of the fantasy. Te eagerly-awaited 2013 display was yet to be unveiled as Waterfront went to press, but the impressive offerings from the past few years hint at another visual feast for shoppers. In 2012 the windows were inspired by the Paramount Pictures movie Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away 3D and were unveiled with live performances by Cirque du Soleil acrobats. Five scenes from the film were depicted inside the windows, featuring hand-painted fantasy murals and sculpted animation that tumbled and moved acrobatically. Spectators also had the opportunity to have their own


image appear on a character inside the window which was then posted on the Bloomingdale’s Facebook page. In another unique twist, shoppers could also step into the 3D adventure by downloading a special app, allowing them to enter the story and interact with its scenes as they leapt to life on screen. Using this technology, every window offered a new surprise such as the opportunity to capture family and friends in a photograph with the characters. In 2011 the windows celebrated the legendary Bloomingdale’s shopping bags throughout the years with a selection of recreated oversized vintage Bloomingdale’s shopping bags, tucked inside dreamy tufted blue velvet, which magically opened to feature a diorama of sculpted animation. store Printemps flew in Hollywood superstar and style icon Gwyneth Paltrow for the grand opening of its 2013 Christmas windows. Tis year the store has joined with fashion


powerhouse Prada for the stunning display entitled Noël, Joyeuse Obsession by Prada. Te display features a 16 metre long track with Santa taking off in his sledge as well as more than 150 stars and snowflakes and 80 teddy bears. Of the 11 windows, four are animated while the other seven showcase the latest fashion for the winter season. Wherever you shop, these wonderfully theatrical displays will turn your trip from the usual dreary Christmas rush into a sensational seasonal adventure.
