Alliances 2014 | 3 Comment

Welcome to the Alliances 2014 − our definitive guide providing an ins ight into the collaborations formed in the

water industry by the leading civil and pro- cess engineering businesses and consultants. Alliances have grown with AMP5, as the water and sewerage companies seem to prefer dealing with them. Consortiums won the lion’s share of the work available in the water companies’ current capital invest- ment programmes.

AMP6 is rapidly approaching and atten- tions are being turned towards what that will bring. Will alliances be the favoured route for AMP6? Most definitely. Thames Water has created an alliance to deliver its AMP6 delivery programme. This alliance also includes two design and build consortia, CVA and SMB. Then there’s the shortlist announced last month for the main construction work on the proposed Thames Tideway Tunnel. Eight organisations are shortlisted – and all are joint ventures. also includes a number of joint ventures in the shape of ETM, BarhaleWSP, Byzak Entec and Morgan Sindall Grontmij. Indications are that cost and performance will be the key factors for AMP6, with the capex spend expected to be more than the £24B in AMP5.

This means the water companies will put more scrutiny on how costs can be mini- mised and any wasteful processes removed. This has led to talk of of innovative and flexible solutions and, most importantly, collaboration.

As AMP5 closes it is inevitable that we will lose some joint ventures as contracts are not renewed or in, the case of KMI, the partners form other collaborations. Finally, there are many collaborative ventures working in the water industry and in compiling Alliances 2014 we have only scratched the surface. Omissions have not been intentional – if you are one of these let me know.
