off to good flights—except for Ron. Ron’s plane hit the dirt shortly after launch. That goes to show that no good deed goes unpun- ished. Ron and fellow event sponsor, Ann Maly, had put up a $100 cash prize for the compressed air winner. Certainly the scent of cash brought out some interesting models in the Speed 400 Scale Duration event. Kirby and Shirley Hinson, of North Carolina, had put up $100 as a cash prize for the best flight by a model of a pre-1913 airplane in the event. Dave Harding brought out a 1913 Antoinette, and Steve Moskal had a 1913 Blackburn. Dave won the prize—and donated the cash to SAM!
Dave also had a bright red and silver ANT 25—a long range monoplane that the Soviets had used to fly from Moscow to San Jacinto, California in July 1937, setting a long distance flight record of 7,100 miles. Dave had ordered up appropriate Russian language decals and graphics from Callie’s Graphics down in New Mexico. It was amus- ing to watch three grown men trying to match decals to photos and place them on the ship in the correct location the evening before the contest!

glider contest at the Champs. Clancy said he had a high start that could “launch a desk- top”, and the boys brought out some big glid- ers to test that claim.
The 2014 SAM Champs will be held at Muncie, Indiana from September 14 through September 19. This year’s Champs will hon- or the centennial of Chet Lanzo’s birth.
Champs Contest Manager, Dave Harding, has posted a good deal of 2014 Champs in- formation on the SAM website. He’s got a good team with Jim O’Reilly as F/F CD, Mike Salvador as the R/C CD, and veterans Chuck and Tina Kime as registrars. You’ll be in good hands with that crew of contest officials.
