Spirit of Yesterday Porterfield Collegiate by Joe Woods

Joe Woods, from Lexington, Texas, writes in this month with a tail dragger classic. Joe writes, “This 1

⁄6 -scale Porterfield

Collegiate, was built from a Spirit of Yesteryear kit of the Astro-Flight electric design that was popular in the 1980s. The model is powered by a 25-size E-RC brushless outrunner

turning a 11–4.5 electric prop. A 45-amp speed control coupled with a 3-cell 3300 mAh Li-Po battery completes the power package. The Porterfield cruises very scale- like at half throttle and has an endurance of just over ten minutes. It is covered in heat-shrink fabric finished with butyrate dope. The registration numbers and aircraft logos came from Callie Graphics. The radio operates rudder, elevator and throttle functions and is quite responsive with this 3-channel setup. Ready to fly weight is right around 3.5 pounds with a wing loading of about 12 ounces/square foot, producing a very scale looking flight pattern.”
