EVX-48

Sport fly Pattern to 3D with this midsize electric aerobat!

he EVX-48 started life as a quick and dirty R/C profile designed for performing sport aerobatics. I wanted a plane that would fly smoothly enough for decent Pattern flying, but agile enough for some 3D. I finished the profile design drawings, but the building part was put aside as other projects took precedence.

I started rethinking the design when I was looking for something new to bring to last Fall’s NEAT Fair. I really didn’t want to bring a profile, so I decided to rework the profile fuselage into a built-up design. I real- ly like the resultant fuselage shape that in- cluded a rather unique front end combined with the smooth compound curvy aft section.

And flying the EVX-48 turned out to be a

treat. It will perform most standard aerobat- ic maneuvers including large loops and rolls and knife edge flight. Inverted flight is a non-issue, and hovering and rolling circles are also easy if you have the piloting skills. All in all, a lot of fun to fly. To help make transporting and flying eas- ier, I incorporated a number of favorite fea- tures into the design. These included plug-in wings, a large removable top hatch for easy component access, and a steerable tail wheel. To save time, I used wheel pants re- cycled from an E-flite 300 32E that suffered a midair with a 30% Thunderbolt at my R/C club’s annual fun fly last year. I have a hard time throwing good parts away.
