110th Amateur Match Play Championship Ben Geyer | Spyglass Hill | Aug. 12-16

A month after shredding the field

at the NCGA Amateur Stroke Play, Arbuckle’s Ben Geyer took no prisoners in the NCGA’s other flagship champion- ship—the Amateur Match Play. Geyer became the first player in 51

years to win both the Amateur Stroke Play and Match Play in the same sum- mer, beating Andrew Morgan 5 and 4 in the 36-hole final to cap a dominating season. Geyer admitted that chasing history

inspired his run. “Reading about that in the (match

play preview) article kind of pumped me up to want to play really well and win this tournament,” Geyer said.

Geyer cemented his place in North-

ern California golf history, and will col- lect his second consecutive Player of the Year title this year. He certainly leaves amateur golf on top. “To (win both events) is really special,

and a nice way to go out,” said Geyer, who turned professional. Geyer will miss Spyglass Hill, a

course he calls his favorite. He entered Pre-Qualifying for Q-School at the end of the month, but tied for 57th out of 74 players at San Juan Oaks. Geyer qualified for match play as the

No. 13 seed after shooting 1-over 145, but only reached the 18th hole once in his five matches, a 1 up win over the fourth-seeded Cody Blick in the Round of 16. Geyer won four straight holes (Nos. 8-11) in the 36-hole final against the 11th-seeded Morgan to take a 4-up lead, and maintained that cushion the rest of the way.

Morgan, a redshirt freshman at Cal,

had trailed just two holes in his first four matches, and knocked out defending

Ben Geyer

champ Jake Yount in the first round. But Geyer was too much in the finals, and led by as many as 6 up. Geyer closed out the match on the par-5 14th.
