Pac-12 Road Trip

Cal Berkeley

After nearly 90 years of accumu- lating damage from straddling the Hayward Fault, the decaying California Memorial Stadium was just retrofitted with a $321 million renovation project, bringing it up to par with the best venues on the West Coast. Memorial Stadium is nestled into the Berkeley foothills, giving spectators in the top rows impres- sive views of the San Francisco Bay and Strawberry Canyon. Fans can also gather on the aptly named Tightwad Hill to get a free view of games from outside the eastern side of the stadium, adding a Berkeley-esque charm. Cal football was a dynasty in the 1920s and ’30s, at one point going

Sports Illustrated named the Rose Bowl the No. 1 venue in college sports. Anyone who has attended “The Granddaddy of Them All” on a sunbathed New Year’s Day in the serene setting of Pasadena would agree. The Rose Bowl—which can

50 straight games without a loss. Cal has captured five national titles, but none since 1937, the last year it won the Rose Bowl. The Cal men’s golf team is currently the Big Man on Campus, winning a record 11 tournaments during the 2012-13 season. The self- funded Bears don’t have a true home course, but practice in Oakland at Metropolitan GL, voted the best driving range in the East Bay by NCGA Golf readers. Oakland’s Lake Chabot GC is a budget-friendly municipal with wild elevation changes and spectacular views of the San Francisco Bay, while San Leandro’s Monarch Bay and Berkeley’s Tilden Park also offer beautiful public settings. hold more than 100,000 fan—has hosted events in two Olympics (1932 and 1984), five Super Bowls and World Cup Finals for both men and women. But it’s gained the most no- toriety for staging the oldest bowl game in college football, the Rose Bowl, which was founded in 1902. UCLA began playing its home

games at the National Historic Land- mark in 1982, and has won five Rose Bowl games, as well as a national title in 1954. While not as decorated as its cross-town rival USC on the football field, it would be unfair to mention UCLA without touting its 11 men’s basketball titles—10 via the Wizard of Westwood, coaching legend John Wooden. UCLA is also spoiled when it

comes to golf. The Bruins have access to a trio of George Thomas masterpieces in Bel-Air, Riviera and Los Angeles country clubs, and also play Brentwood and Hillcrest. The UCLA men’s team will be hosting a tournament this year at Tom Fazio’s Pelican Hill, which has two courses ranked in America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses.
