Cooper Lighting and Safety, a busi- ness unit of power management compa- ny Eaton, presented at the recent launch of the new British Council for Offices (BCO) Guide to Lighting, which took place in London on 26th September. Andy Gallacher, product marketing manager at Eaton’s Cooper Lighting and Safety, discussed the latest devel- opments in technology that are revolu- tionising the world of lighting and showed developers how they can meet technical specifications as well as envi- ronmental considerations. www.cooper-ls.com

At the recent ELEX Coventry exhibition that took place at the Ricoh Arena on 19th-20th September, visitors to the HellermannTyton stand were able to try the company’s new Q-Series open- head cable tie range, competing to see who could apply the most Q-ties in 60 seconds, with a prize to the win- ner of a HellermannTyton Deluxe Cable Scout package. The time trial was designed to demon- strate just how fast the Q-ties are. Richard Rands, HellermannTyton prod- uct manager for fastenings and fixings explained, “Independent tests showed more than a 25% time saving when applying multiple Q-ties compared with other conventional products, so we decided to put this to the test ourselves to see just how far we could push this.” www.hellermanntyton.co.uk

During a refurbishment of its IT labs, Aston University installed LED lighting and presence detectors from Tamlite Lighting, reducing its lighting energy consumption by 88% and saving £2,200 a year on electricity bills. Aston University has risen to the

challenge of improving its environ- mental profile as it has in place a demanding target to reduce CO2 emissions by 48% by 2020. www.tamlite.co.uk

Following the successful launch of train- ing courses in its new purpose designed training centre at its Dover site, Megger has announced a third opportunity to learn about Power Transformer Testing Techniques. The next two-day course is being held on 12th-13th November and will be presented by testing experts from Megger who have wide experience in transformer working. It is suitable for all those who work with HV/MV and LV power transformers - the only pre- requisite for those attending being a working knowledge of industrial elec- trical safe systems of work. www.megger.com

6 Helping the Concordia salvage project

DIESELEC THISTLE HAS recently provided the back-up for the salvage operation to raise the stricken Costa Concordia cruise ship, which was wrecked off the coast of Isola del Giglio in Italy in January 2012.

The company supplied the 5,000kVA diesel gen- erator system for the operation’s support vessel, ASV Pioneer, which was also built in the UK - at Fergusson Shipyard in Greenock. Comprising five 1,000kVA generators, the system incorporates a complex Comap synchronising system, designed by Dieselec Thistle, which ensures that the five genera- tors work seamlessly as a single power source, shar- ing the required power load across the equipment for the most efficient and reliable electrical supply. Dieselec Thistle’s sales director, Brian Muirie, commented, “The raising of the Costa Concordia is the largest and most daring salvage operation anyone has ever attempted, taking 20 months to plan. Righting the ship from its tilted position under 15m of water was the most perilous stage in a longer

process that will involve moving and investigating the wreckage. A reliable power supply has played an essential role in helping to turn the vessel to an upright position and we are proud to have been part of the infrastructure that enabled this impressive salvage operation to be so successful.” www.dieselecthistle.co.uk

Sun, sea and safety

HOLIDAYMAKERS VISITING A new exclusive hotel on the Balearic Island of Ibiza are enjoying their holi- day in safety following the specification of fire detec- tion solutions from Apollo Fire Detectors. The Ushuaïa Ibiza Beach Hotel completed the building of its new hotel wing, The Ushuaïa Tower, in May this year. As part of the build, global fire detection manufacturer, Apollo Fire Detectors, was selected as the technology provider by Pitiusas de Seguridad, the company appointed to supply and commission the fire system for the new hotel wing.

In total, nearly 650 Apollo XP95 detectors were specified to meet the main fire detection requirements in the Ushuaïa Tower. The intelligent system was designed around two networked four-loop Kentec Syncro fire panels approved and certified to EN 54 parts 2 and 4.

In addition to luxury accommodation, the Ushuaïa Ibiza Beach Hotel complex is also famous for hosting open-air parties, attracting up to 5,000 people a night who flock to see the biggest DJs in the world, as well as a host of celebrity and VIP guests.

Due to the vibrant nature of the hotel, a large number of guests and visitors are present both inside and outside of the premises at any given time. This,

which is part of the Southeastern Anatolia Program (GAP), and will irrigate over 94,000 hectares. The project needed robust pumps and equipment to move the water from the Atatürk dam in the Euphrates River to the irri- gation canal. WEG has supplied eight medium voltage asynchro- nous motors to drive the pumps that transport water to the irriga- tion canal. www.weg.net

coupled with the fact that very loud music is a feature of the Ushuaïa experience, led the Apollo design team to recommend a wide variety of interior and exterior fire sounders and visual indicators, including multi- tone alerts.

Jose Cazorla, general manager at Pitiusas de Seguridad, commented, “The two wings of the hotel are fully networked with a fire detection system that has been specifically designed to cope with the demands of a busy hotel, which has a large turnover of guests on a regular basis. We’re confident that Apollo’s fire detection solutions will protect the Ushuaïa Tower and its guests for many years to come.” www.apollo-fire.co.uk
