News Industry Making waves and breaking records

JOHN DAVIES, HEAD of UK con- sumer retail at Schneider Electric, recently broke the current world speed record by 0.3mph in his Laser Vago sailing dinghy. Davies and his nephew Jack reached the heady speeds of 17.6mph at the West Kirby Marine Lake on the Wirral, Cheshire, on August 30th, beating the previous world record of 17.3mph. “It started out as just another sailing trip but as the winds grew stronger we thought we could really be on to some- thing,” said John. To help verify the record the Schneider Electric Vago, like

many in its class, is monitored by a GPS Data logger that tracks the speed and distance travelled. The sailing dinghy also features a series of waterproof HD cameras to capture the action and for use in future training sessions. John added, “Sailing at speed in strong winds can be tricky as one gust or a mistake could easily have capsized us. We were reliant entirely on our own skills and quick reactions to ensure that when that next gust hit we could harness it to maximise the energy from the wind.

Generators supplied to west country police project

POWERTECNIQUE HAS SECURED a contract with Shepherd Engineering Services (SES) to supply gen- erators to the Avon and Somerset Police Accommodation PFI project. Avon and Somerset Police are developing four new sites as part of its ‘Building for the Future’ cam-

paign which will help process offenders more effi- ciently and will integrate the custody and investiga- tive functions of the force to improve response times for specialist teams. Working collaboratively with Shepherd Engineering Services, Powertecnique has secured the supply of four generators with sizes varying between 1,250kVA and 715kVA standby power rat- ings, a 48 hour external fuel tank, fire suppression, a 60dba exhaust system, synchronising panel and G59 protection equipment for each site. Darren Pearce, managing director at Powertecnique, explained, “We will supply fuel pipework including trace heating and fuel tank heaters to each of the sites, and supply and install signal cable between each generator and the switchboard. We always proactively recommend solutions and guarantee accuracy and honesty from our initial design.” www.powertecnique.com

KRONES AG, A manufacturer of drinks filling and packaging systems, is migrating all the CAE systems it uses worldwide to Eplan, which will mean replacing the previous solution across 140 workstations. Eplan Electric P8, Eplan Fluid, Eplan Pro Panel and the new EEC One will be imple- mented gradually by means of a comprehensive, collectively developed consulting pro- gramme. Interdepartmental engineering cooperation and the use of configurators to increase automation were key factors in the decision that led to choosing Eplan. In the future, users at various sites will process their electrical and fluid engineering using the Eplan Platform. Eplan’s Maximilian Brandl commented, “Our consulting team is in the starting blocks ready to press ahead with the rapid implementation.” www.eplan.co.uk
