Birmingham New Street station receives lighting upgrade


Wieland Electric has helped transform Birmingham New Street station by supply- ing its gesis 2-, 5- and 6-pole pluggable installation system with integrated DALI to feed lighting round the station’s new con- course. The project has been more than three years in the making, with the first phase of the new concourse now complet- ed and open to passengers. The station is the busiest interchange station on Britain’s national rail network and previously was dark, unwelcoming and overcrowded, with poor access for passengers. The regeneration project has seen a much needed, bigger and brighter new concourse with improved access to all platforms, including 36 new escalators and 15 lifts reaching every platform.


Wieland’s gesis pluggable system was


the preferred choice as it allows for quick and easy error-free installation on-site. Wieland were also able to adhere to strict delivery times to keep the project on schedule. The gesis range of compo- nents come pre-assembled and tested so stripping, clamping and cutting to length is not required.

Eaton’s Cooper Lighting and Safety has provided energy effi- cient lighting for the extension to the iconic Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC), which opened its new events space earlier this year. The project included a custom built solution for mains lighting, emergency lighting and a central battery unit to run the building’s entire emergency lighting system. The EICC had two key demands from the lighting. First, it had to be energy efficient and second, it had to be discreet and dimmable to zero percent to avoid interference with the performing artists. “Sustainability is important to us and maximising our energy


efficiency was vital,” said Hans Rissmann, chief executive at the EICC. “Eaton’s Cooper Lighting and Safety system was chosen as it presented the most energy effi- cient solution, while at the same time being able to meet our spe- cific need for dimmable lighting.” “From the outset there was a challenge set by the EICC, who were unsure if it would be possi- ble to dim LEDs in the same way as can be done with halogen luminaries,” added Paul Gregory, specification sales director at Eaton’s Cooper Lighting and Safety. “Our lighting experts worked closely with the team from the EICC to fully understand their requirements and designed a bespoke solution which is a real first for the lighting and control industry, something unmatched by any other organisation.” To read the full story visit
