Feature Transformers & Switchgear Sussex college is switching on

The latest switchgear technology from Havells is playing a key role at Sussex Downs College as part of a project that will offer the college’s apprentices the opportunity to train and hone their skills using over £4,000 worth of the company’s electrical equipment

As well as presenting the equipment to the students, Lawrence also talked to the apprentices about how to use the kit both in a training environment and out in the workplace. He also explained the growing importance of

thinking company. The future of elec- trical switchgear is tied to the increas- ing demand for energy efficiency and the team at Havells are developing products that are breaking new ground in this area. It is reassuring that our electrical apprentices are honing their practical skills on future-proof prod- ucts and building their knowledge of the wider trends within the electrical contracting industry.”

London Underground’s electrical switchgear. R&B Group will work with UK Power Networks Services (UKPN Services) to design and manufacture a series of LV and MV switch- board panels for the SSR3B project on the District Line - as part of the underground’s biggest rebuilding programme. Speaking of the contract, managing director, Mark Beswick, commented, “The tube is the oldest underground railway network in the world and is under increasing demand to deliver the extra capacity needed.

“The new switchgear panels will improve the efficiency of the underground’s power systems and help the company deliver a leading transport service.” With around 3.5 million journeys stopping at a total of 270 stations each day, a successful handover is crucial, meaning R&B will need to work closely with the team at London Underground and UKPN Services.

ith a 200 strong facility in Newhaven, which it shares with Havells-Sylvania, its parent company, Havells is based right in the centre of the Sussex Downs catchment area. This made the college, which has three campuses in East Sussex, an ideal company partner. The electrical installation depart- ment is located at the Eastbourne campus and it is here that 60 appren- tices train for a Level 2 or Level 3 Diploma in Electrical Installation. The first phase of the Havells equipment (consumer units and devices) was pre- sented by Mike Lawrence, UK market- ing manager and Jonathan Lim, communications manager from

energy efficiency to the electrical trade, and how understanding the monitoring and metering of electrical supplies will be a key skill set for the apprentices as they progress through their careers.

Hunt commented, “We are delighted to have formed this relationship with Havells as they are such a forward

Commenting on the partnership, Lawrence added, “Havells is proud to support the next generation of elec- trical installers. As our warehouse and factory are based in Newhaven, this is a great opportunity to work with Sussex Downs College to train and support the best in class appren- tices and students with the best in class products. Hopefully, this is the beginning of a closer relationship that will benefit young electricians in the area for years to come, with Havells investing time to help apprentices really understand the challenges they will face in the ever evolving electrical industry.” Hayes concluded, “Thanks to the generous supply of this equipment from Havells, we have been able to upgrade our existing switchgear to keep up with the latest industry stan- dards. It is great that our apprentices now have the chance to get hands-on with the latest kit on offer to the trade. It gives them a real taste of what to expect out on-site.”

Getting London’s commuters to work on time

pecialist engineering company R&B Group is to undertake a £1.4m refurbishment of

Commencing in the autumn, the project will

take more than 12 months to complete and will be constructed at R&B’s dedicated workshop in Manchester.

As a manufacturer of both AC and DC switchgear, R&B offers a comprehensive service for the mainte- nance of switchgear, circuit breakers and all ancillary equipment. Beswick continued, “With our previous experience working with the Maryland Transit Authority in the US, Network Rail and the Philippines Light Rail Transit Authority, we understand the chal- lenges of supporting a travel service of this scale. “We will need to work to a strict timeframe to ensure that the work does not impact the day to

day running of the underground or any further repairs.” Speaking of the project, Geoff Corcoran, engineering manager at UKPN Services, added, “Having worked with the team on past projects, we are confident in their ability to deliver the results we need on time and within budget.” R&B Group www.rbswitch.co.uk T: 01706 369 933
