Day in the Life...
With over 25 years of experience within the construction industry, David Frise, CEO of AIS (Association of Interior Specialists) walks us through his typical day.
Day
Having been in the Royal Navy for 10 years, I’ve always been an early riser, which means I can get up and enjoy breakfast whilst reading through The FT and The Sun online to get a ‘balanced’ view. I always eat breakfast whilst listening to ‘Today’ on Radio 4 to find out what’s going on in the world.
I normally check my emails and send a few tweets highlighting anything of interest within the industry or about football before heading off to the office on my bike – it’s a hard slog to begin with (trying to keep the pace up Crouch Hill can be tough!) but is rewarded with the ride alongside Regents Park Canal, through the zoo. You never know what you'll see ‐ a hyena yesterday!
Once I’m at the office after a shower, I usually get a coffee from the local Greek cafe. Then I have a real chance to get up to speed with things – I check though outstanding paperwork, read through the latest issues of the trade magazines and talk to colleagues. I normally have one or two tweets to reply to by this point too.
With our annual conference on the horizon, I’ve been spending a lot of time planning the schedule and liaising with speakers to ensure we deliver thoughtful content that is both useful and engaging for delegates. The conference programme has been put together to address the issues

currently faced by the fit out industry and comprises a two‐part workshop and discussion platform, allowing contractors and manufacturers to share opinions and gain valuable advice.
By this time, I’m usually ready for lunch which is either a quick sandwich at my desk or in many cases, a lunch meeting with someone from the industry ‐ BIM (Building Information Modelling) has been somewhat of a hot topic lately and AIS has formed a new BIM4FitOut group. I’m often called upon to attend various update meetings about that or other groups over lunch.
Once I’ve tied up all loose ends at the office, it’s time for another jaunt on my bike to get back home. Once in, I tend to take the dog for a walk around the woods close by to where I live or on a Friday, I’ll walk to the local pub. The evening is often a good chance to work on projects that require no interruption so I’ll sometimes work for a while once I’m back and cook supper with my wife over a glass of wine.
I always try to read for a while before going to bed – it really helps to clear the mind, ready for whatever the next day throws at me.
