freight house has been painted in a number of different paint schemes rang- ing from Maine Central’s standard light gray with variations of dark green trim to the current yellow with brown trim of the Conway Scenic Railway. Among oth- er surviving Maine Central standard freight houses is one of private owner- ship

in

which is painted in barn red with white trim as well as the freight house in Oak- land, Maine which hosts an operator’s bay with train order signal, freight doors with transom lights and appears to have been painted in a lighter shade of gray with yet another variation of dark green trim. The system wide use of these structures, their longevity along with the variety of uses and paint schemes makes the prototype a natural subject for a model project. The design’s simple boxy lines, low

pitched roof line and minimum of deco- ration epitomize New England frugality. However, this should not limit the build- ing’s uses since similar utilitarian ware- housing structures can be found nearly everywhere in the United States and Canada.

Creative Laser Design’s new kit of the Lancaster, New Hampshire,

Bartlett Freight House consists of quali- ty laser-cut basswood and thin plywood panels in addition to clear glazing and thin construction paper roofing material to construct the building as it was origi- nally built with a loading dock and three freight doors on the track side. The cur- rent version used by the Conway Scenic Railway can easily be created should the builder wish by closing in several of the freight doors and shortening the loading dock.

The kit is well thought out and de- spite its large roughly twenty inch by six inch foot print, easy to assemble. All the laser parts are precisely cut and fit ex- actly which greatly speeds construction of the model. Adequate interior bracing is supplied with the kit, though not re- quired, additional ³/₁₆ inch square bass- wood from the wood stores was added to the building to insure additional strength. A notable feature of the kit is the two sub-roof pieces that have the eave brackets cut into them. These “brackets” fit into notches cut along the tops of the walls. This provides positive alignment of the sub-roof with the struc- ture. The brackets are fragile and can be protected by assembling the sub-roof
