dreamed of turning the Atlas RS-1 into some kind of Alco switcher by shorten- ing the frame and body. I never did, however, because the thought of that kind of work just made me shutter. I figured Bachmann had to have cheated somewhere. Well, they didn't really. The model checks out with the di- mensions I had. I did chuckle some- what as I read on one of the online fo- rums about the long hood being too wide. Much attention was given to it being too wide but there was not much mention of how wide. Allegedly, it is one scale inch too wide. I don’t think anyone can accurately measure one scale inch in N scale and actually no- tice its absence from a model. Bach- mann got this engine right when it comes to dimensions.
The handrails on the model were something I was concerned about. I was worried they would be grossly oversized. The handrails
on Bach-
mann's S-4 are about .014″ thick. Nor- mally I like to use .008″ wire on my models so these are almost twice that thickness. I don’t see this as a devas- tating problem though. The handrails look well proportioned. In fact, they are a nice balance of looks and durability. Young ones can handle this locomotive
without damaging it and the older ones can run and enjoy it as is. Kit- bashers such as myself can always add thinner handrails. I like detailing loco- motives so I think everyone wins here. The body also lacks grab irons. There should be grab irons on the nose and on the sides of the long hood near the cab. Manufacturers can go two ways with this. They can either mold them into the shell or add separately applied wire grab irons. The latter is more cost- ly obviously. Bachmann left them off the model, and I applaud them for this. Kitbashers would have to shave them off of the model and destroy the paint job in order to add the wire grabs. The model does not suffer from the omis- sion of these grabs so I applaud Bach- mann for doing this. Bachmann did a great job with the paintwork on the model. The shell has gorgeous rivet detail and all of the lou- vers and doors are cleanly molded. The extremely fine body lines are not hidden by thick layers of paint so all of the detail looks crisp. On my model, the Southern Pacific lettering is perfect looking. The paint is thick enough that the orange let- tering is uniform in color but is thin enough so the black paint of the car body does not show through the lettering.
