the N scale locomotive arena was al- ways the Alco switcher. There was only one model, the Alco S-2, that was avail- able for decades. This model was an old design, had no capability for DCC con- version and had handrails that could be considered oversized on an HO mod- el. However, it was all we had so we made it work. Fortunately for N scale modelers,

Bachmann has put an end to years upon years of yearning for a better Alco

switcher. Bachmann's new Alco S-4 switcher is what we have been wanting and waiting for. Bachmann's release of the N scale 44-tonner locomotive proved that they could model a small diesel locomotive well. Taking it one step further, that locomotive was of- fered DCC equipped and ran beautiful- ly. With that success under Bach- mann's belt, the time was right for this Alco S-4 model. Bachmann is offering their new S-4 painted in five roadnames: Western Maryland, Southern Pacific, New York Central (P&LE), Santa Fe and Union Pacific. This, of course is just the first run. Hopefully, there will be future runs as there are many more road- names that can be done on this model. The Alco S-4 locomotive was produced from 1949 to 1957. Roughly 800 of these locomotives were built for railroads across the country. The S-4 locomotive was powered by Alco's turbocharged 6- cylinder 539 prime mover which pro- duced 1,000 horsepower. The S-4 is near- ly identical to its older brother, the Alco S-2. The main difference in spotting fea- tures is in the trucks. The S-2's rode on Alco's blunt trucks while the S-4 rode on AAR type A trucks. I was curious to see if Bachmann had

“played” with any of the key dimen- sions of the locomotive in order to fit the mechanism under the long hood. After all, this is a very narrow hooded diesel locomotive. I had always
