same year that the first interurban line entered service. As

the twentieth century

ap-

proached, Pittsburgh was growing at a tremendous pace. It boasted a popula- tion of almost a half million people by 1900 and was home to major industries including steel, glass, and oil. With its abundance of industry, railroads also took on tremendous importance. The task of getting the large numbers of people employed in these fields to and from work fell to a growing network of electric streetcar lines. In 1891 there were 89 miles of streetcar track. By 1900 that had increased to 393 miles. There were 75 different routes, some 900 streetcars, 15 carbarns, nine power houses and 14 power substations. In 1896 the consolidation of the street

railway system got underway. From a system that had grown to over 150 sep- arate companies (although many of these were separate in name only), three major operators emerged: Consol- idated Traction, United Traction Com- pany of Pittsburgh, and Southern Trac- tion. In 1902 the Philadelphia Company purchased the Southern Traction Com- pany, renamed it Pittsburgh Railways and then absorbed the other two larger systems. Pittsburgh’s streetcar opera- tions were now unified under one major carrier. From there, the story follows the outline of many North American transit operations. The company enters receivership, then emerges. The auto- mobile and bus begin making inroads. The railway responds with newer and better cars. The Great Depression hits causing a severe loss in revenues. Bank- ruptcy is declared and service is re- duced. Buses continue to make inroads. The streetcar company purchases PCC

cars in an attempt to lure customers back. World War II comes and streetcar business increases dramatically. Follow- ing the war, service begins to drop off as automobiles become available again. The railway struggles on, loosing rider- ship, reducing routes and placing buses in service. Finally, a local transit au- thority steps in an attempt to save what is left.

While it may be a typical tale, each

city’s case is unique, and Transit In The Triangle does an excellent job of present- ing Pittsburgh’s transit history without getting bogged down in minutia. The book’s maps, charts and rosters help the reader follow along. It’s the accompany- ing pictures, however, that really make the book so special. In between the horsecar era of the 1800’s and the PCC cars of the 1960’s there was a very large and interesting

variety of streetcars

serving the Steel City. Transit In The Tri- angle examines the fleet beginning with the cars that Pittsburgh Railways inher- ited from its predecessor lines and fol- lows the changes made as operations took on a more standardized look. The quality of the printing and the photographs are very good. Many of the pictures show not just the cars, but the surrounding scene, as well. For modelers, even if they don’t have a traction line on their layout, this infor- mation can be invaluable. If you are looking for city shots from almost any period between 1890’s and the 1960’s, you can find them here. There is even a 16-page all-color section showing the Pittsburgh Railways operations during the Eisenhower and Kennedy years. If you like streetcars or have an in- terest in Pennsylvania history, I think that you’ll enjoy this book.–C.P.D.
