Sometimes the lettering on models is applied so heavily that it almost feels like Braille. That is not the case here. The “watch your step” lettering on the pilot just looks incredible. The small lettering is legible and very nicely ap- plied. On my sample the tiger striping on the long hood nose was a little bit fuzzy around the edges but a little weathering would make this disap- pear. Most modelers would probably never even notice this, and I had to closely study the model to see it. One of the big selling points of this

model is that it comes DCC equipped. Bachmann has a basic dual mode de- coder (operates on d.c. as well as DCC) which they have been using in models such as this one. It does not really com- pare to decoders from other manufac- turers as far as features and frills but it certainly does get the job done well enough. I first ran my engine on d.c. and was impressed at how smoothly and quietly the engine ran. The LED headlights came on well before the en- gine began to crawl which is a nice
touch. The engine started running at the 1.2 s.m.p.h. mark and accelerated smoothly through its speed range. It was also a very quiet runner on d.c. with a barely noticeable growl. I then tested this engine’s DCC per- formance using my NCE PowerCab system. Programming the locomotive was a simple process which only took a few seconds, and the engine’s perform- ance was even better now. It started on speed step 1 at about .8 s.m.p.h. I could barely see it moving. Operation was smooth through each speed step. About the only negative I could find was that the locomotive had more “growl” in DCC mode. This decoder does not have all of the options as far as programming CV’s as its peers so the modeler really can’t ad- just much to enhance the model’s per- formance. I would like to see how this locomotive would run on a more “high- end” decoder although this decoder is not bad. I really liked when the headlights are lit. The LED lighting has a warm
