Choctaw Electric Cooperative members, it’s all possible, thanks to a new bill payment program known as prepaid metering. Available now for members, prepaid metering lets you pay for electricity like you pay for cell phone minutes, food, even gas for your car.

Prepaid metering works like this: You pay in advance for your electricity based on how much you think you can afford that month, and what you think you’ll

Choctaw Electric. “With this program, you pay what you want, when you want.”

Prepaying is a good solution for any CEC member, but it’s especially helpful for members on a tight budget or those who move often, own rental properties, are in college or the military.

“For some members, CEC’s billing cycles don’t work very well with their household cash flow,” Matlock explained. “With prepaid metering, you won’t have to worry about billing cycles. You pay what you can afford.”

Prepaid eliminates the need for late fees and disconnect/reconnect charges. This eliminates a lot of worries and expenses for the co-op member, and protects them from falling into a never-ending debt cycle.

Prepaid programs also encourages members to use energy more wisely. A nationwide study found that consumers who prepay generally use less energy than consumers on traditional billing arrangements because they’re more aware of how much electricity they are using and when they tend to use it.

“Prepaid is great way for the member to be in charge and manage their own electric costs,” said Matlock.
