Lewis and Clark exhibit comes to Bartlesville

By Kaylan Watkins I

n May of 1804, Capt. Meriwether Lewis and 2nd Lt. William Clark set out into the vast unknown with a small team of men. Their objective was to explore a newly ac- quired territory, the United States of America. Their journey, which lasted until September of 1806, was full of discovery, adventure, and fresh knowledge. Over two centuries later, Charles J. Fritz, a world-renowned

artist, has created an art exhibit that depicts those treacher- ous explorations from so long ago. “About ten years ago, Fritz read the journals of Lewis and

Clark and re-created the journey they went on,” Bob Fraser, CEO of Woolaroc Museum & Wildlife Preserve, said. “He painted 100 different paintings from the perspective of what they would have seen in 1804.” Woolaroc Museum in Bartlesville, Okla., will be hosting the Lewis and Clark: Corps of Discovery exhibit, which will be available to the public until December 29. In addition to Fritz’s paintings, there will also be a series of sculptures by Richard Greeves. “Greeves is a truly incredible sculptor,” Fraser said. “He created 50 bronze sculptures that show the expedition from the Indians’ point of view.” According to Fraser, this will be the fi rst time that both exhibits will be in the same place at once. This particular show was not an easy one to put together. From beginning to end, Fraser guesses that it has taken ap- proximately 10 years to come to fruition. “Ten years ago, a dentist in Bartlesville, who is an avid art collector, had this hope of being able to stage a nationally recognized art show here at Woolaroc,” Fraser said. That dentist, Dean Zervas, with the help of an art expert from the west coast, did most of the research and initial preparation to bring these two artists into the same realm. Fraser believes this particular exhibit has many contribu- tions to offer anyone who takes the time to view it. “The show has a lot of aspects to it,” Fraser said. “From a tourism point of view, we are really excited about it. From an educational standpoint, we are even more excited about it.”
