Andrew Jordan has overall responsibility for the combined IT, broadcast, operations and technology functions supporting NBCUniversal International. He was previously CTO and COO within a division of Thomson Reuters.


The power of big data


Since NBCUniversal is a collection of different businesses across TV, film and news the use of the same data may deliver a different analysis. For example, box office data about the performance of Despicable Me 2 may have a different meaning when presented in the context of news or by the film division. Having a flexible approach to data analysis allows us to be better informed across all our businesses.


Jordan on ‘big data’ I don’t think there is such a thing. Big is too subjective a tag for anything related to data. What is ‘big’ for one organisation is ‘small’ for another. ‘Big data’ could be viewed as a term for a marketeer’s or sales person’s convenience.


That said, data analysis has value. Historically, this has often


been done by analysing the data which


we capture and store internally. The difference now is that so much data is being created in the public domain and not by us and the key to success is how to use that data in an additive way to existing approaches to data analysis.

The jury is still out. It’s not that it’s not being looked at, but what is important are the circumstances in which it is most appropriate. Like any big shift in the industry we have to understand its relevance. For example, if everyone in the media industry had reacted immediately as soon as 3D reached the home, the world would now look very different.
