The wow factor Content moves to cloud

division says it is extremely busy preparing for greater use of the cloud in its


set-top boxes, as well as improving user interfaces (UI) and the appearance of 4K. “We are hugely excited about taking PVRs into the cloud, because it is a ‘win- win’ for everyone,” says Yves Padrines who looks after their efforts in the EMEAR markets. “It can save broadcasters the physical cost of the box, or even in a combination with a box it can hugely expand the box’s potential in terms of storage and functionality. It can ‘push’ all manner of products and services to the viewer. We see cloud-based next-generation


services being a very important part of our business going forward.”


Cisco is also working on a variety of exciting programmes for its Snowflake UI. It already supplies Zon in Portugal, France’s SFR, Liberty


showcased an HEVC suite of technologies with all the necessary back-office functionality to handle Ultra HD material.

“In my area of responsibility, you can look at the more mature markets and without giving names away I can tell you that some broadcasters are looking very enthusiastically at 4K, and to start within the next 18-24 months, he says. “I certainly see 4K happening during 2015-2016, with 2016 being an important year for 4K. “Indeed, the availability of 4K to the home could well allow new delivery models to emerge, and certainly new monetisation models in VOD. We are much more enthusiastic for 4K than 3D. HEVC makes the difference.”
