a good overview of the group be- fore you disturb them or distract them by coming closer. Unobtrusive observation can give a hint as to whether there’s anything wrong. You can see if there’s an animal off by herself or acting in an abnormal way, dull, or in an unusual posture or position that might indicate pain or distress. There is usually something dif-
ferent about the sick animal that alerts you to the possibility of ill- ness. These small clues are what can lead you to take a closer look to try to determine what might be wrong. Awareness of these little signs can make the difference in discovering or missing the early warning clues of sickness, lameness or some other problem that might need attention and care. “A person sometimes takes a
quick overview, counts the animals, and if they are all present and ac- counted for, might not look any closer,” says Mays. “Maybe we were in a hurry or distracted, or have other things we need to be doing because everyone is so busy, and we really didn’t notice that the cow had a lump on her jaw that wasn’t there the last time we checked, or a swollen udder from mastitis.” There is no substitute for know-
ing your cattle well, and being tuned in to various aspects of bo- vine behavior that can tell you a lot about their well-being. A head count, or a once-over-
lightly look without “seeing” each one as an individual, may mean you’ll miss important clues. By the next day’s observation, a sick ani- mal may be worse or dead, or the ailment more diffi cult to treat or reverse. Cattle-checking is an art, primarily dependent upon your abil- ity to “read” your cows and to detect subtle behavior changes.
