UPS range for the marine sector
Eaton Power Quality has introduced a new range of UPS units from 1 to 15kVA that have type approval from Det Norske Veritas (DNV) and the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS)
T
he use of type approved sys- tems can simplify and shorten UPS projects signifi- cantly as, in general, addi- tional project surveys or certificates are unnecessary. The approvals guarantee that the products are rigorously tested to be fit for demanding marine applica- tions and meet the requirements of the classification societies. As a result, Eaton’s UPSs allow cus- tomers to save time and money, and provide peace of mind. The DNV and ABS type approvals cover Eaton’s 9130 and EX Marine UPSs with power rat- ings from 1 to 3kVA. The 9130 is well suited for use in conjunction with navigation, communica- tions, automation and bridge equipment. The EX, which is rack system capable, is designed for applications with small servers and storage systems, as well as for bridge equipment. Eaton’s 9155 and 9355 Marine UPSs, with DNV type approval and ABS product design assess- ment, both come with power rat- ings of 8 to 15kVA. They provide a choice of variable inputs and outputs for support of navigation, communications, automation and bridge equipment as well as propulsion control. Eaton also offers marine models with power ratings greater than 15kVA. In these cases the individual approvals are obtained by Eaton
working with the various global classification societies for system testing and certification. “The wide range of marine UPS equipment we offer and the con- siderable investment we’ve made in certification highlights Eaton’s commitment to the marine sector,” said Teppo Henttonen, 3ph solutions manager for Eaton Power Quality, EMEA. “We have listened carefully to our customers in the sector and, based on what they have told us, we have devel- oped products that deliver gen- uine benefits in terms of convenience, quality, performance and value for money.”
Approved UPSs from Eaton have been designed to meet the specific demands of marine appli- cations, including resistance to harsh environmental conditions like vibration, shock, rapid changes in orientation and large ambient temperature swings. Eaton’s marine models are based on the same technology used in the company’s standard UPSs. In addition, the units comply with the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements for maritime navigation and communications systems according to IEC 60945, allowing them to be installed on the bridge without the need for additional precautions to guard against interference to sensitive bridge equipment. They are easy to install, using mounting rails that can be bolted or welded to the deck head, and their compact format is of particular benefit in ships and oil rigs where space is invariably at a premium.
Because the marine units are based on standard designs, spares are readily available worldwide, which is another important con- sideration for shipboard systems.
