Surge Resistant RCD’s to meet Regulation 534.2.6 A

selos WT

the new generation of terminal blocks from Wieland

onnection expert Wieland Electric is launching selosWT, a new generation of terminal blocks that have been designed to provide a secure and maintenance-free connection, optimized and time- saving handling adds up to a considerable reduction in costs. The selos series of products combine the classic screw connection with modern connection technology, with the focus on customer benefits and increased efficiency.

C Whether a single solid-conductor wire or multi-

stranded wire is used or if a wire end ferrule is present or not, selos provides a simple and secure electrical connection. Owing to the large amount of terminal space, universal connection and easy expansion through the use of multi-wire connections are possible at any time. At the same time,

n SPD produces a current spike during switch-on which is sufficient to trip upstream RCD’s. To meet the current wiring regulations requires the use of surge resistant RCD’s capable of withstanding a 3 kA 8/20 µs pulse. Selective RCCB’s meet this requirement but they can only be used in circuits requiring fire protection. They cannot be used for protection against electric shock. For applications requiring electric shock protection, use a Type KV RCD. Type KV RCCB’s have an immunity to surge currents <3kA 8/20µs and are available in 30, 100, 300 and 500mA sensitivity. They are suitable for use with SPD’s, where a Selective RCCB would not meet the disconnection time required under the IET Wiring Regulations.

astell has launched an enhanced version of its Iso- Lok padlock range. The new range features a more complex differ code system, increasing the overall safety level offered to customers. Castell’s tracking system already ensures that each padlock supplied to a site is unique. This removes the issue of keys fitting multiple padlocks and therefore reduces risk in lockout / tagout procedures. The company’s enhanced range of padlocks now takes the separation of differ codes one stage further. “The quality of the Iso-Lok range is very important to our client base,” said David Hughes, Castell’s sales director. “By increasing the integrity of our padlocks we have effectively increased the safety of

the Iso-Lok range. This product improvement – coupled with our ability to track differ codes, paint and engrave padlocks – delivers substantial value to our customers.”

wastewater treatment plant in Bradford is saving over £61,000 on energy costs following installation of ABB variable-speed drives on its re- circulation pumps. The filter recirculation pumps at Yorkshire Water’s Esholt Wastewater Treatment Works are used to pump final effluent to the filter distribution chamber, diluting the effluent and providing the required wetting rates for the filters. There are three 180 kW, fixed-speed recirculation pumps on site, which were operating as duty/ duty/ standby. Normal operation was for two pumps to be operated continuously providing a

recirculation flow of approximately 1,000 litres per second. Operating the two pumps this way cost £235,000 per year. Recent operational changes at the site have meant that the load to the filters is substantially reduced and some of the filters have been de-commissioned.

Reliable Power for Demanding Industrial Automation

pecially designed for control devices, Balluff power supplies are easily integrated into your control package and offer the safety of power surge protection. The PS series is available in a wide range of 24V models with single or 3-phase input. Output current ranges from 0.75 A (18 W) to 40 A (960 W), a size for most applications. If you need even more power, simply connect multiple power supplies together in parallel. Other features include built-in advanced overload and overvoltage protection, load regulation to +/- one per cent, ripple/noise of less than 50mV on most models and adjustable outputs to compensate for differences in specific control needs. The mean time between failure is specified over 210,000 hours (24 years) while operating at published specifications. All power supplies hold worldwide approvals for use anywhere. All models are din-rail mountable and simple to install. Recessed input and output screw terminals give protection from accidental contact. The range also includes 12 volt and 48 volt models.

New Crabtree Video A

new video for electrical contractors who install MCCB Panelboards has just been released, designed to show how meeting the needs of a modern power distribution and monitoring system is made much easier using Crabtree Powerstar Panelboards. The video is instructional and informative, giving an overview of the features of the range available and the resulting benefits for the installer. Most importantly, it shows how installers can easily assemble the equivalent of a bespoke factory-built assembly on site, for themselves, complete with incoming and outgoing metering and integral surge protection. This can be achieved as a result of Powerstar’s major benefit; J and G MCCBs can be mixed and configured on site into customised assemblies. This is unlike other brands, where the panelboards are supplied to the market in pre-configured split-load type arrangements (e.g. with only 4J or 4G out- goers), limiting on-site flexibility and often forcing installers to use the more expensive devices.
