Aiming to be out of this world
THE NEW MGE Galaxy 300i UPS system from Schneider Electric provides a solution for protecting small and medium businesses, commercial build- ings and technical facilities. Galaxy 300i is a 3-phase UPS that is fully RoHS compliant. The power efficiency rates up to 90.5% with output transformer. This efficiency provides lower operational and cooling costs over the medium and long term. The UPS system uses a double conversion online topol- ogy which provides a regulated and reliable power supply. These features, combined with the compact design and easy installation, meets all the key requirements of customers look- ing for a 3-phase UPS in the 10- 40kVA power range. Dale Wrangles, Schneider Electric IT Business, UK & Ireland vice president, said, “Feedback from our channel partners and core customers shows that power availability, reliability, manageability and convenience are the key issues that UPS systems need to address for low and medium level power users. The new Galaxy 300i system has been designed with these require- ments firmly in mind.”

Making earthquake response times faster
FINNING UK HAS secured a contract to provide a fleet of Quick Response Modules (QRMs) for deploy- ment to any of the UK’s nuclear stations in the event of an earthquake, tsunami or other site emergency. EDF Energy set up the Japanese Earthquake Response Programme immediately after the nuclear disaster in Fukushima in March 2011. The programme was initiated to identify a number of potential failure scenarios, should a similar event occur in the future. Finning has been working with EDF Energy over the past 12 months to develop and certify an emer- gency power generation package that complies with new, stringent requirements put in place fol- lowing the disaster at Fukushima. Building on this relationship, EDF Energy’s Japanese Earthquake Response team tasked Finning with designing easily deployable, quick response, low maintenance, emergency generator packages that would be flexible to cover multiple modes of operation in a number of failure scenarios. This equipment would be stored at secure off-site locations around the
UK and deployed rapidly in the event of an emergency. Each Quick Response Module (QRM) from Finning is designed to accommodate off-road terrain move- ment, rough handling and multi-lifting methods including ISO container points, forklift pockets and a Container Handling Equipment Manufacturers (CHEM) Hook loading point. Each QRM comprises of ten container packaged generators, ten container pack- aged switchboards and 50m of distribution cabling. The generators feature synchronising controllers, remote refuelling points, low ambient kits and EDF status and warning systems.

Final instalment of Eaton’s Power 101 videos
EATON HAS LAUNCHED the final instalment in its first series of Power 101 with Professor Wattson power management videos for IT professionals, resellers and distributors. In the video, called ‘Maximising Reliability’, professor Wattson reveals how a maintenance bypass and other accessories can be used to optimise design and ensure up-
time whenever an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) requires maintenance or replacement. The video is available on the company’s dedicated IT solutions website. A UPS is a proven reliability mea- sure, however, it still needs mainte- nance and sometimes replacement which can mean shutting down all other equipment whenever this process is taking place. Thus, to avoid down-time, professor Wattson explains how a mainte- nance bypass unit works alongside a UPS to keep equipment running without interruption by routing mains power through the UPS to the rest of the equipment.
However, should the UPS need maintenance, the power can be diverted directly to the equipment through the maintenance bypass, allowing the user to replace or repair the UPS without having to shut the entire infrastructure down. Once the UPS is ready to support equipment again, it can be brought back online without load loss or power interruption. At the end of the video, view- ers can download a short appli- cation note that shows the latest maintenance bypass technology as offered by Eaton’s HotSwap maintenance bypass product.
