Russell Dorset, Managing director of K3 Retail, has an affinity with Retail, indeed he formed part of the original team at K3 that identified retail as a sector to move into.
Here, Russell gives insight into what the MD of a leading retail IT services company gets up to in his busy day-to-day life.
I get up at 5.30am for a quick dog walk and then it’s back to check on my emails before breakfast with the family. My Microsoft Windows phone makes it easy for me to keep on top of what’s happening in the business. The company supports over 100 retailers, many of whom are open 24/7 via their eCommerce and mobile ordering platforms. For that reason, our systems are mission critical overnight so my primary concern is ensuring that all is well.
My hour long drive into the office gives me time to think and formulate my ideas for the day ahead, also providing the opportunity to catch up with my colleagues – it’s important for me to stay in touch with everybody in the team. Traffic permitting, I arrive at the office before 8am. There’s a team of over 175 spread over three floors. I start my day by having a quick walk around the office and usually head for our customer services team on the top floor as I like to be visible and most importantly accessible to everyone. This gives me the opportunity to really understand my team on a one to one basis. We have a strong team ethos and it’s my job to make sure that everyone feels empowered.
My days usually consist of back to back meetings in many different forms but there’s no such thing as a typical day – every day has a totally different make‐ up. I could be out visiting customer sites – finding out how their business is progressing, at meetings in the city, on one to one video conferences, in the office considering business performance
and strategy, or managing the team and motivating them. Today, in amongst meetings, we had a working lunch and learn session with a new customer who shared why they selected K3 Retail over the competition, also providing an overview of their business and the project. It’s a great way to kick off a new customer relationship.
I try to leave the office by 6.30pm, continuing any important discussions on the journey home. Finally, I look forward to spending quality time with my family over dinner and taking our dog out for his final walk of the day. My evenings are often interspersed with work here and there. What can I say? I love the industry I work in!
An ideal day
My ideal day at work would consist of walking through the door and announcing the conclusion of a customer acquisition – this always results in a big celebration. Our latest win was celebrated with a
companywide pizza lunch – always well received by all!
I really enjoy presenting to the team, sharing my vision for our business and meeting our customers. Understanding our client’s customers needs is vital because ultimately it’s their shopping behaviour that drives retailers to adopt new technologies.
