62 Spyglass Hill “
A 62 is good at Bermuda Dunes. A 62 at Spyglass is a whole diff erent story.”
P
HIL MICKELSON broke the course record at Spyglass Hill by two strokes when he fi red a 10-under
62 in the fi rst round of the 2005 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. “A 62 is good at Bermuda Dunes,”
said KEVIN SUTHERLAND at the time. “A 62 at Spyglass is a whole different story. That’s an amazing round.” Just two years later, Sutherland
rattled off 10 birdies during the sec- ond round of the 2007 AT&T en route to a 63. Sutherland had a very real chance at breaking the record, but he snap-hooked a 3-wood on his third to last hole (the reachable par-5 sev- enth) for a lost ball, before salvaging bogey and settling—it’s all relative at that point—for a 63. “Spyglass is one of my favorite
courses in the world,” said Sutherland after. “But a 63 was not the score I was thinking of when I teed off.” To give you an idea of
how hard Spyglass plays, its rating of 75.5 from the blue tees matches the stretched-out U.S. Open tees at Pebble Beach. Spyglass is also ranked as the fourth toughest course in America by Golf Digest. When Mickelson shot 62 in 2005,
LUKE DONALD was in the group ahead of him. Donald wondered how long it would be before someone would shoot a round like that. Dan Forsman’s course record of 8-under 64 had stood since 1993 (it was tied by David Berganio Jr. in 2001). “It only took 365 days,” said a
proud Donald after fi ring a 62 of his own in 2006. “I’m glad it was me.” Starting on the back nine, Donald
Luke Donald
birdied Nos. 11-13, holed out a 96-yard sand wedge for eagle, and birdied No. 15 en route to a 6-under 30. “Not much was go- ing wrong,” Donald
said. “I didn’t really threaten to make bogey, and kept it in play.” Donald tied the record with a bird-
ie on his fi nal hole, sinking a 12-footer on No. 9.
