LATE TO FOUR-BALL GROUP Ed writes: Q. In four-ball stroke play, my partner didn’t show up until after the other three of us had started our walk down the fairway. We knew he couldn’t have a score to count, but what about just teeing off and catching up and playing along with us. Would there be any penalty? A. Your partner would not incur a penalty for joining the group, unless any of his strokes assisted you. If his actions assisted you, then you would incur the appli- cable penalty. See Rule 31-8 for further clarification.

USING LOOSE IMPEDIMENTS TO LINE UP Frank writes: Q. Are you allowed to move or place loose impediments in your line of play intentionally in order to assist you with

alignment? If not, what are the penalties in match and stroke play? A. Under Rule 8-2a, any mark placed to indicate the line of play must be removed prior to the stroke. If the mark is not removed and the stroke is made, it is a two-stroke penalty in stroke play and loss of hole in match play.

USING AN AIMING ROD Wayne writes: Q. May players use an aiming rod during a round of play if they remove it before the stroke is played, or are they only allowed on the practice areas? A. Decision 14-3/10.3 states that the player would be disqualified for using an alignment rod during the round as the rod is unusual equipment and such use, during the stipulated round, is not permitted.

PLACING INSTEAD OF DROPPING Deborah writes: Q. We have a lateral water hazard that runs along the side and back of a hole. We are able to take a two-club relief but will not be able to drop it as it will surely go back into the water. Is there any way for us to place the ball with-

out having to go through the procedure for dropping twice and then placing? A. Decision 26-1/10 prohibits you from placing without first going through the procedure of dropping under Rule 26-1b.
