Q&A Kruk and Kuip

San Francisco Giants fans know them simply as “Kruk and Kuip.” Announcers MIKE KRUKOW and DUANE KUIPER played for the Giants before winning seven Em-

mys as broadcasters for their former team. A Cal Poly San Luis Obispo grad, Krukow arrived in San Francisco in 1983 after stints with the Chicago Cubs and Philadelphia Phillies. Krukow was voted the starting right-handed pitcher for the Giants’ 1980s All-Decade Team. A Wisconsin native, Kuiper played second base for the Cleveland Indians before he was traded to San Francisco in 1982. Kuiper was voted one of the 100 Greatest Players in Indians history.

Kuiper, the Giants’ play-by-play announcer, is in his 28th season in the broadcast booth, while Krukow, the color commentator, is in his 22nd. They’ve both been known to bring their golf clubs on the road, and in 2011, they were bestowed the Jack Lemmon Ambassador of Golf

award by the California Golf Writers and

Broadcasters Association. 54 / NCGA.ORG / SUMMER 2013

How would you describe your golf game? KRUK: Declining. In the off- season I play about three days a week. In baseball season, probably just once a month, which is why my game is in decline. Once the season starts, if we play golf, by the fifth inning, we’re ready to take a nap. KUIP: I’m going to do it like I was graded in grade school. I’d probably be a C.

Do you ever bring your clubs on the road? Are there any courses you look forward to playing? KRUK: I haven’t brought my clubs on the road for several years, but the courses I love to play on the road are Oakmont when we play the Pirates. We’ve gotten the chance to play Shinnecock when we are in New York, and it’s one of my all-time favorites. I got the chance to play Augusta

this year, which was pretty cool. We played there on a Wednesday-Thursday, and then the following Tuesday we were at the AT&T. That was a pretty good slice of golf heaven. San Francisco Golf Club is

my favorite. When my game was better, The Olympic Club was more desirable to play, but now it’s just a beast. Of all the courses in

Monterey, I love Cypress Point.

Pitchers have to worry about how to get out of a jam. They can’t worry about how they got into a jam. If you are a golfer, you learn that very early on. – MIKE KRUKOW
