Nicola Borrows visits T e Hale Grill in Altrincham to sample some gastronomic delights

S

ituated in the lovely town of Hale in Altrincham, T e Hale Grill forms part of the chic gastro pub chain Blackhouse, run by Gusto owners

Living Ventures. With a new site soon to open in Liverpool’s Albert Dock, my partner and I visited the Hale site to enjoy a quiet meal for two. As we entered the sound of a live piano playing and dim lighting transported us from the quirky high street straight into a wonderfully rustic yet chic bar. We were warmly greeted and were so keen to sit down and eat that our friendly waitress Hannah, who was a wonderful host, immediately took us to our table. Low hanging lights above the tables provided the eff ect of a candlelit meal and added to the stylish modern ambience. T e menu off ered an array of fresh cuisine, from delectable lobster to prime Wagyu fi llet steaks, the fi nest beef available. I opted for a starter of T ai fi shcakes with sweet chilli dip and a main of duck breast with blackcurrant and ginger scented pak choi. My partner chose the honey rosemary and lemon chicken skewers to start and the unusual choice of wagyu burger to follow, an extraordinary meat not often found on many menus. Of course being in a gastro pub we chose to keep things simple and order a side of chips. Other options included mixed summer greens and corn on the cob with chilli butter. We were then guided through the

comprehensive selection of wines and settled on a French countryside red, La Serre Merlot, which was beautifully rich and fruity. A matter of minutes later our starters arrived. T e T ai fi shcakes were complemented by the lovely sweet chilli dip and my partner’s skewers were lusciously light and juicy with a refreshing hint of lemon. When the main course arrived, the delightful merlot wine proved a perfect

accompaniment to the duck breast, which was cooked to perfection, slightly pink in the middle with a soft and juicy texture. T e sharp accompaniment of the blackcurrant jus was also a welcoming and delicious change from a more common supplement such as plum or orange sauce. My partner enjoyed his wagyu burger, appreciating the taste of the unusual soft meat with the crispy and fl avoursome chips. Although the previous courses were substantial enough for our appetites we knew with the quality of the food so far we could not pass on the opportunity to try a dessert. My partner opted for the rhubarb fool, another British classic which was beautifully sweet and stylishly presented in a dessert glass. T e mixed berry trifl e immediately caught my eye as it is a dish which reminded me of my childhood and not one I’d often seen gracing a restaurant menu. T e rustic presentation of the trifl e, which arrived in a traditional kitchen jar, was a nice touch. With hidden strawberries and raspberries in the jelly and hundreds and thousands coating the top of the deliciously sweet and light cream it really was a simple but delicious dessert which reminded me of all the comfort of home. My partner and I enjoyed our relaxed evening surrounded by friendly people, with all the charm of a traditional British pub combined with the panache of trendy city dining T e Hale Grill really is the perfect place for a spot of refi ned lunch or a relaxed evening meal with the people you love.
