Princess Cruises president and CEO. After prayers by the Bishop of Winchester, Captain Draper and HRH climbed the six steps to the naming platform where she read out the words, “I name this ship Royal Princess. May God bless her and all who sail in her.” Ten came the moment everyone had been waiting for. Te Duchess cut a ribbon to release a £1,250 Nebuchadnezzar of Moët & Chandon champagne against the hull to christen Royal Princess. Not that it was the first Nebuchednezzar to be broken that morning; it was in fact the third. Te first two were trial runs, making the eyewatering total of the bubbly bill reach nearly £4,000. Te bottle smashed first time and a resounding cheer - and sigh of relief - went up from the assembled crowd, an assortment of media plus a celebrity contingent. Sir Bruce Forsyth and his wife Wilnelia were there, as was actor Christopher Biggins, Des O’ Connor and former Atomic Kitten Liz McClarnon. Blue and white confetti exploded into the slate
grey skies as Kerry Ellis struck up the National Anthem, although her microphone was not
working. Tat aside, the launch of a Princess by a Princess had gone very well. A few moments later Kate was whisked away
for a ship tour - her first time on a cruise ship - followed by those of us who were invited to remain on board for the next couple of days. Te Duchess’ mother in law, Diana, Princess of
Wales. named the first Royal Princess ship back in 1984.
10 Reasons to Sail
on Royal Princess In 1977, the line’s Pacific Princess was cast in a starring role on a then new television show called Te Love Boat which became an instant hit. It is a nice touch then, that the ship’s horn on Royal Princess, the latest addition to the fleet, sounds the first two lines from that television show. Royal Princess made her debut in June 2013 and has as her godmother, HRH Te Duchess of Cambridge.
