[] MAILBAG Well Done

Ray Rostan HAMPDEN-SYDNEY COLLEGE Thank you for the incredibly generous and well-written

article (“More than a Number,” April 2013), on my behalf, in both Lacrosse Magazine and on LaxMagazine.com. After 35 years of collegiate coaching, your article was truly a gift. I heard from so many of our alumni dating back to my first volunteer coaching stint at Farmingdale College, as an assistant to coach Fred Acee in 1975. I cannot thank Jac Coyne enough for the time he spent in researching the article and speaking with my old friends, Bill Tierney and Hank Janczyk, my son and assistant coach, Jason Rostan, and our team captains. Starting the article with the words “Danny Viglione” was a great touch and hit a chord on many great memories from Cortland State. My dad was a small town newspaperman on Long Island for 30 years. I appreciate a well-written and researched article.

 HAPPY GILMORE I enjoyed Gary Lambrecht’s

article (“Good Luck Handicapping Title Race,” May 15 on LaxMagazine. com) about how the NCAA championship was up for grabs. I did, however, want to point out one small

inaccuracy. Ohio State’s Logan Schuss, whom I immensely enjoyed watching for four years, is not the program’s all-time leading scorer. That would be Upper Arlington (Ohio) alum Terry Gilmore, who scored 250 points in the “short

shorts” 1970s era of STX Superlights with heads the size of small snow shovels. (Schuss is the all-time goals leader.) Having played against Gilmore in summer pickup games in Columbus, I remember him as having tailback speed and an intense, burning desire to never lose or be outplayed.

Ron Mellert Medina, Ohio

 FIRST AND

FAVORITE I couldn’t help laughing while reading “Love at

First Stick” (June 2013), because I recently combined two of my first and favorite sticks. I’m now playing with a Harrow Gail Decker Women’s Edition shaft and a STX Xen

head, and it’s the best I’ve ever played with. Guess it just goes to show that sometimes first is the best!

Jackie Burke South Lyon, Mich.

 CALL IT A

COMEBACK Thank you so much for

the amazing article on Kelly Berger (“Look Good, Feel Good, Play Good,” June 2013). I recently tore my ACL for a second time, resulting in my fourth knee surgery. People have told me I should never play again. Reading that Kelly also tore both her ACLs and is so successful really inspired me to never give up!

Kaylee Horchak Mullica Hill, N.J.

Dave Muti MOUNTAIN LAKES, N.J. GAME CHANGER

Richie Meade’s position to end the faceoff after every goal (“Faceoffs in the Crosshairs,” April 2013) could not be more wrong. There is no other sport where a team that is down by two or three goals with 30 seconds left in the game has a chance to win. This is why lacrosse fans stay to the end of the game. The faceoff can be a game changer.
