Nitt Picking
Maggie McCormick’s 87 points in 2013 were the most by a Penn State player in 24 years. Here’s how she finished 1-on-1s.
>> WHAT I DO
BLEED BLUE AND WHITE
We have the most supportive and passionate alumni in the Penn State community that just have so much pride in their athletic programs. Every time we step out on the field, we’re not only playing for ourselves, our team and Penn State, but we’re playing for those alumni and that community who just love that school so much. That’s contagious, so we want to play for them.
I come from a family of seven, five kids and then my parents. (I’m the second-youngest kid, the fourth.)
MISS MY FAMILY
And we’re always together. My sister Alex got engaged last Christmas and married this month, and she did her wedding dress shopping in Pennsylvania, because I couldn’t get away from school during the spring. It’s that family atmosphere that I miss. Every weekend in the summer, we’ll all come back together, get the cornhole out, lay by the pool and just hang out together.
TAKE IT TO NEXT LEVEL
It’s a huge transition when you go from a high school setting to a college setting, just the work that needs to be done, the speed of the game and the competitiveness. You’ll hit a wall freshman year where you’re like, “I don’t know if I can do this.” It’s getting over that and being confident in the type of player that you are. When you have that confidence and you know you belong out there, other things are going to fall into place and you’re going to see the field and you’re going to be able to contribute.
MY FAVORITE ATHLETE
Peyton Manning. Every day he does what he needs to do, is a team player and just a workhorse.
MY A-HA MOMENT
I’m not going to lie — the beginning of my freshman year I definitely struggled, until we were playing Maryland in a fall tournament. I was on the sideline watching, and I had noticed that no one was really stepping up and going behind the goal. So I thought to myself, “I have one shot to show something to my coach. I’m going to give it a shot.” And I went behind the goal and started feeding and I got a couple shots off. And now I don’t leave behind the goal. It’s my spot.
>> MY HAPPY VALLEY HANGOUT
The Corner Room. You can see College Avenue from the windows when you eat. It has all these pictures from Penn State 100 years ago and it has so much history there. They have half-price burgers on Thursdays and a lot of girls on the team go.
