Ward Melville’s once- dormant dynasty awoke in a big way

the Internet or a map. The high school is in Setauket, N.Y., about 10 minutes from the Sound on Long Island’s North Shore. Who was Ward Melville? Another relatively simple question. Melville, the man, was a 19th- and 20th- century American philanthropist and businessman. Today, you might better know his estate as Stony Brook University. What is Ward Melville? Now that’s a little more complicated.

Ward Melville is not a town. It’s a bunch
of towns, and more
than just
the three villages from which its school district takes its name. Together those towns form a community.
And at the center of this community is lacrosse. It’s why more than 600 people gathered June 8 at The Bench Bar & Grill to watch New York’s Class A fi nal on closed circuit TV and why tickets to the party sold out four days in advance.
