PS4 TRADE GUIDE: THE CONSOLE
TEN THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
1. Consumers with existing headphones will be able to use them by plugging them directly into the PS4 gamepad, so media lovers can use an existing headset to enjoy their favourite TV shows and films.
REMOTE PLAY
Vita owners can get the most out of their handheld using the PS4’s streaming capabilities. Remote Play allows PS4 gameplay to be transfered to the Vita via Wi-Fi, freeing up the TV for others in the house. Sony says the majority of PS4 titles will support the feature and will give gamers access to their favourite PS4 titles on the Vita. This compatability between the home and handheld consoles will also allows players of both systems to join each other online in cross- platform gameplay in compatible titles.
2. PlayStation Plus will play a key role on the PS4 as the annual membership grants users a host of benefits such as free games. The service is required for players who want to game online and will offer them an additional 1GB of Cloud storage, along with the ability to automatically download software updates.
3. There will be a
mandatory day one patch for the PS4, which users will be required to install upon powering up the console for the first time.
4. Despite its ability to read DVD and Blu-ray discs, the PS4 will not play CDs or MP3 files at launch.
5. Sharing is a key feature of the PS4. Players can share their in-game footage via Game DVR, and share images via social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Twitch.
HANDS-ON
The DualShock 4 controller might look very similar to the gamepad Sony settled on back in 1994, but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t changed over the years. This couldn’t be more true than with the PS4’s new pad, which has undergone a serious facelift. Arguably the biggest feature of the new controller is its new capacitive touch strip, which supports multi-touch input and adds an entirely new dimension to gaming on the console. Meanwhile, the new lightbar serves as an additional indicator for players. In compatible titles, the bar will flash red if a players health runs low or reflect the game’s narrative. Other changes to the DualShock 4 include the ability to charge the gamepad while the PS4 is both active and in standby mode, which is done through the bundled micro-USB port and cable. For those times when players want to invite their friends over for a gaming session, the PS4 allows for up to four controllers to be synced at once, meaning nobody has to sit out and watch from the sidelines.
6. Vita Remote Play lets Vita owners use their handheld as a controller and screen for the PS4. The service allows users to stream gameplay from console to Vita via Wi-Fi.
7. The PS4 is region free, allowing gamers to buy titles from Japan, US and Europe to play them on their UK console.
8. PS4 owners should make the new PlayStation app a priority on launch day. The iOS and Android app allows PS4 owners to manage their account on- the-go while also serving as a second-screen in supported games.
9. The PS4 can be
positioned both upright and flat on its side. Sony will accompany the console’s launch with an official stand, which ensure a players’ new pride and joy isn’t at risk during gaming sessions.
10. Sony’s streaming service Gaikai will debut in Europe in 2014. Launching in North America early next year, the service will give players access to the back catalogue of PS3 titles on the next-gen console.
