MCV checks in with the UK’s video game retailers, journalists and developers to find out their thoughts and expectations for Sony’s newest PlayStation
IT’S GOING TO BE A BIG NIGHT
CHARLOTTE KNIGHT, GAME We can’t wait for the launch of the PS4. We’ve seen huge demand from gamers wanting to get their hands on next-gen consoles and with just weeks to go, the passion is incredible.
We’re doing everything that gamers could want in the run up to launch. We’ve held exclusive lock-in tours to give early hands-on access to PS4, and we will have stores opening across the UK for midnight launches. We are working closely with Sony and will be bringing the excitement of the PS4 to our stores, website, social media channels and more. It’s going to be an exciting night.
NIALL LAWLOR, GAMESTOP It’s massively exciting for us and a big move forward for gaming, Think about it, the last time we got new consoles there was no iPad, there was no Facebook, no Twitter, so it’s
been a long time. The innovation level on the PS4 is a massive change. We will sell every unit we can get our hands on between now and years end. The planning for this launch started a long time ago, so we’ve been at this for almost a couple of years, getting ready for launch.
PHIL BROWES, HMV We are extremely excited by the next-gen launches and have a huge amount of activity planned, including midnight openings, in-store takeovers and demos, as well as above-the- line advertising and a huge social media plot.
IT WILL RE-ESTABLISH PLAYSTATION

Sony has done a better job of listening to its audience than Microsoft, the machine just looks cooler – don’t disregard that, both Joe Public and Timbo Technology love aesthetics – and it’s going to end up with superior games.

The PS4 is exciting because, like a Windows machine, it tears down barriers for developers – big and small – and I’m looking forward to seeing a new wave of of indie, online and free-to-play games not possible before on console.

The future isn’t written yet, and many of the games that will likely fuel the success of the PS4 haven’t even been announced. The first-party line- up at launch arguably isn’t as strong as Microsoft’s offering, but the PS4 has plenty more in store for the coming months. Sony has spent most of the year dominating the next-gen messaging, generating goodwill and repeatedly saying the right things. Now is the time for it to stand by those sentiments, continue to nurture smaller, independent titles, and prove that PS4 really is all about the games.

The launch of both consoles will be massive for the gaming industry. There is generally a lag between a console’s launch and the abundance of choice of games for the consumer. However, this will not stop the millions of early adopters worldwide rushing to the stores at midnight in late November wanting to be the first to play on the enhanced machines. Both Sony and Microsoft will both do hugely well and the games industry will get back onto its feet to surprise everyone by how fast it can grow. Everyone in the industry will stop predicting winners and losers and switch over to arguing about which console is best, or decide the PC format is dead again.
