anyone in the area — a major turning point in his life, to be sure. But being a very social person, he quickly made friends. Invitations to all of us co-workers to his place for supper after work or on weekends when his out-of- town friends might be visiting were ongoing. He was an accomplished chef, and he had a standing offer to me to join him for dinner any time I wished. Being a bachelor, I took him up on this on many occasions. I still have (and use) some of his recipes he shared, having learned some culinary techniques from him. We also encouraged him to join us in various expeditions and such and be a part of the crowd. George became part of a group of us who back then made New Year’s train trips every year to the likes of Montre- al, New York, and his hometown of Reading in the Boston suburbs. The Books Department was somewhat of a roller coaster ride, as Kalmbach changed its goals and direction for this group several times. This frustrated all of us, and eventu- ally George transferred to the Kalmbach Li- brary around 1978, which proved a perfect fit for the librarian-esque aura he sort of em- braced. And none too soon. Kalmbach exited the railroad and model railroad book market in the summer of 1979, focusing instead on general plastic modeling and radio-control airplane models. This about the time I left Kalmbach to form my own publishing-ser- vices company.

Several years later Kalmbach returned to publishing prototype and model railroad books, prompting George to oversee the cre- ation of a popular line of perfect-bound, soft- cover railroad reference books — notably, the indispensable Historical Guide to North

ENTERTAINMENT “CANNONBALL” PAUL!

American Railroads — several of which he authored. Eventually, George left Kalmbach in 1997 and went into semi-retirement, free- lancing his services as needed. He began writing the Drury On Board column for RAILFAN & RAILROAD, and lent his talents to other magazines as well. He continued to host group travel tours to explore the rail- ways of Europe, another one of his primary interests.

I ran into George quite often at various railroad shows, during my historical society research visits to Kalmbach, or at the Mil- waukee-area “Monday Night Slide Group That Meets on Tuesdays” gang in the many years that followed. But my memories of working directly with George at Kalmbach Books in the 1970s remain my favorite among George-related memories, and they still seem like they were only yesterday. Which makes George’s passing all the sad- der for me. —MIKE SCHAFER, EDITORIAL & ART DIRECTOR, WHITE RIVER PRODUCTIONS

More thoughts on Drury

As a young railfan growing up in the infancy of the Information Age, my railroad re- sources were quite limited. Sure, my local li- brary had a few model railroading books, but anything about real railroads was scarce. There was an inpenetrably bible-thick tome with a black cover carrying the ominous title Wreck of the Penn Central that essentially helped prop up the other two books on the shelf. Yet lurking in the shadows was a copy of The Train-Watcher’s Guide to North Amer- ican Railroads, a title I’d later learn lent a bit of insight into the humor of George Drury as he took inspiration from a similary
