Summer Weekend CapeFlyerService Is Running to Cape Cod

SUMMER PASSENGER SERVICE returned to Cape Cod, Mass., when on May 25, 2013, MBTA train 021 left South Station for Middle- boro. But instead of returning north on arrival, a Cape Rail engine crew boarded and the train continued south as the CapeFlyer over freshly-ballasted track to Buzzards Bay on Massachusetts Coastal trackage, crossed the landmark lift bridge over the Cape Cod Canal, and terminated on the Cape at Hyannis.

Passengers are accommodated in four Kawasaki bilevel coaches and two single-level coaches, one of which (below) is decorated in a promo- tional wrap and is equipped to carry bicycles; it also serves as a cafe car. The train runs with a locomotive on each end. On the first run, MP36PH-3C No. 010 was on the south end of the train (right, trailing while returning to Boston) and F40PH-2C No. 1074 on the north end. While the train uses MBTA equipment, it is run under the auspices of the Cape Cod Regional Transportation Authority. In order to break even, the CapeFlyer needs to bring in about $10,800 each weekend, and CCRTA’s Kathy Jensen says that so far, it has brought in more than $13,000 each weekend from more than 3200 passengers. The outbound Friday evening trip is an extension of MBTA train 021, which makes regular commuter stops between South Station and Middleboro, but the other CapeFlyers are all additional movements. On Fridays it leaves South Station at 5:12 p.m. and arrives in Hyannis at 7:50, de- parting for Boston at 8:30 and getting back to Boston at 10:45. On Sat- urdays and Sundays it leave Boston at 8:00 a.m., arriving Hyannis at 10:18; northbound it leaves Hyannis at 6:30 p.m. and arrives Boston at 8:45. The fare is $35.00 round trip between Boston and Hyannis; the train also stops at Braintree, Middleboro, and Buzzards Bay. Visit capeflyer.com for complete information. — WALT LANKENAU

Amtrak Marks Hiring Initiative with Specially-painted Locomotive

TO COMMEMORATE THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY of the Vietnam War and to honor those who have served the country in the military, Amtrak has painted P42DC No. 42 in this red, white, and blue color scheme with a specially designed logo which proclaims that “America’s Railroad Salutes Our Veterans.” No. 42 was chosen to also recognize of Amtrak’s 42 years of service. The locomotive will be rotated through the many Amtrak routes across the country.

The locomotive will also promote Amtrak’s new initiative to hire mil- itary veterans, which will comprise 25 per cent of the railroad’s new

hires by 2015. Amtrak President Joe Boardman, himself a Vietnam vet, said, “The leadership, reliability and high-tech skills veterans bring to the job are a great resource to the operation of America’s Railroad. I’m honored and proud to add more of our country’s service men and women to the Amtrak team.” To meet this goal the railroad will cooperate with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Hiring our Heroes program, the Wounded Warrior Project, RecruitMilitary, and Army PaYS. In addi- tion, the Amtrak Human Capital department will participate in more than 30 military job fairs across the country.
