The Bridge of Flowersis the biggest tourist attraction in Shelburne Falls, Mass. The bridge was originally built for the Shelburne Falls & Colrain trolley line. The Shelburne Falls Women’s Club first put flowers on the bridge in 1929, two years after the trolley line was abandoned.
ers, a walkway full of flora. Still standing is the freight house and yard at Shelburne Falls, preserved as part of the museum's op- erations. The former maintenance shop along Route 112 is a home, the ticket office in Shelburne Falls still stands at the Shel- burne end of the Bridge of Flowers. Recently, a former coal trestle at the foundry in Lyonsville was mostly demolished. For the future, the first order of business is to build a state-of-the-art fireproof shop for No. 10. This project got a big boost when the Massachusetts Cultural Facilities Fund awarded a grant of $27,500, which brings the total amount of money raised for the project to over $60,000. As for expanding the
route down the hill and to the river, the town is interested in such a project, but the new shop remains the museum’s priority. It is safe to say the Bridge of Flowers will remain as it is, so expansion across the river would be highly unlikely. In addition to car No. 10, the museum of- fers hand car rides and a small museum with activities for kids of all ages. The next time you are in the Berkshires, stop on by for a visit. This story was adapted from the museum’s website and was written by Alfred Barten and updated by Sam Bartlett. There is much more information on car No. 10, the railroad and the museum at
