left just behind 25Z and was overtaking the freight on the middle track as the train rounded the Curve. The 50 or more photographers on the ledge could only see 765 through the gaps in the double-stacked containers as it went past (see FINAL FRAME in last month’s is- sue of R&R).


Steam has returned to Horseshoe Curve at long last, and there is no rea- son to believe it won’t happen again in


2014. Back when Norfolk Southern was trying to buy Conrail from the govern- ment in the early 1980s (the “Let Con- rail Be Conrail” years), CEO Robert Claytor tried to recruit railfan support for the merger by promising that Nor- folk & Western J-Class No. 611 would traverse Horseshoe Curve as part of the NS Steam Program. Here we are three decades later and steam has fi- nally returned to the Curve. As an


aside, N&W 611 is close to returning to the rails after being retired in 1994. perhaps Robert Claytor’s promise may come to fruition. But that’s another sto- ry for another day...
