Bristol launches cycle manifesto

Gov responds to Get Britain Cycling


Speaking of petitions, the one backing the findings of the Get Britain Cycling report has yet to hit the 100k needed for Parliament to debate it, (it’s up to 64k at time of press) but the Coalition has provided an early positive response, saying it takes cycling very seriously. BMW cruises into Cycle Show 2013


September’s NEC Cycle Show has already attracted some key exhibitors and now BMW has joined the list to plug its range, from hybrids to full suspension MTBs and a full carbon road bike.


Magura reveals eLect fork

Driving schools teaching cycling


Both the BSM and AA Driving Schools will include a cycle awareness module, in a widely praised move. The incorporation means drivers will be taught cyclists have equal rights to be on the road and a standardised approach to safe driving around cyclists.

Halfords plots for market share grab


£100 million being invested over three years, including stock  Cycle repairs and servicing among targets

RETAILER HALFORDS is setting its sights on market share growth, it has revealed following its latest financial results. The chain is targeting increased online sales and its service offering in particular, as well as P&A and clothing. In the last financial year, cycling remained


largely static despite a strong summer of cycling in 2012. Prolonged winter weather negated the positives of London 2012 and Wiggo’s Le Tour performance, leaving Halfords with a 0.6 per cent like-for-like drop in cycle sales. In its overall business, profits after tax fell 24.5 per cent. The results saw the retailer reveal more about its mooted plans, including an 'enhanced PACs (parts, accessories and clothing) proposition in the new financial year'.


Halfords said it had a 15 per cent share of


the ‘PAC’ market, where there are good opportunities for growth. 15,000 ‘PAC’ lines went live last month. Similarly, the retailer noted it was planning


to address shortcomings in the cycle repair market – believed to be worth £100m in the UK and for which it has an eight per cent share. A ‘Service Revolution’ is in the works for the cycle retailer, costing it £7 million, invested in cycle repair, fitting and incentives, depending on volumes and performance. The improved cycle repair offering will be advertised on the radio and press. Relaunches of exclusive Voodoo and


Boardman ranges are on the cards, as are additions to the Pendleton range. Halfords has also secured technical partner status for Sky Rides across the country. According to The Sunday Times, Halfords is targeting the ‘upmarket customer’ with

APPAREL BRAND Suarez and action camera company JVC have both got behind this year’s BikeBiz Awards as Event Partners. The partnerships come as lobbying


officially opens for the BikeBiz Awards 2013, with the prize night taking place on Wednesday September 25th – the night before Cycle Show begins – at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole, NEC. Colombian clothing label Suarez is


currently expanding into the UK, with trade manager Paul Wignell handling sales. The brand, pitched at the mid to high-end market, aims to combine comfort, performance and moisture management across its ranges. “Suarez Clothing is proud to support the

the hard work that each and everyone plays in growing this amazing industry especially in these challenging economic times. That’s why it’s natural for us to support BikeBiz which recognise all the hard work through these awards.”


Video camera giant JVC is getting closer to the bicycle industry with the release of its Adixxion action camera. Built to take videos and stills on the move, the Wi-Fi- enabled Adixxion is waterproof to 5m, shockproof to withstand a 2m drop and resistant to dust and freezing temperatures.
