JUNE 2013 GROUND HANDLING INTERNATIONAL
PASSENGER HANDLING 13 JBT has found much interest in custom build
This is borne out elsewhere. Jose Carlos Gallego, Regional Sales Manager for JBT Madrid, says that lately he has seen more customers migrating to specifications for custom chassis passenger steps because they provide lower operating costs when compared to commercial truck chassis mounted models. “In addition to lower costs, they are safer than truck chassis because of dynamic braking, a centrally mounted driver’s station and superior stability. Custom chassis models also provide our customers with the choice of diesel or electric power, which has grown more
New Accessair stairs for the PRM popular over recent years”.
It has been a similar success story at AERO Specialities.
“Sales in 2013 have been very good thus far,” reports Derek Rose, who is in charge of International Sales and Marketing. “The international market seems to be expanding quickly as the developing countries continue to grow and air transport demand increases. The international market that is currently the strongest for passenger stairway growth is the MENA region. AERO Specialties is on pace to sell more towable passenger
stairways in 2013 than any year in the past, in addition to all other GSE equipment. “We introduced a new variety of towable passenger stairs in 2012 that allows for servicing of the largest wide- body airframes. In the past, customers had to purchase truck mounted or a much more expensive passenger stair set to reach the height of a wide body airframe door sill. Our newest towable stairway variant allows for cost savings for newly established organisations, airlines or ground handlers that don’t have the budget for a truck mounted unit, but who still require an efficient means of passenger disembarkation. In addition, we have increased the working height range (both minimum and maximum) of our passenger stairs. In the past, customers had to purchase three sets of stairs to service various narrow and wide body aircraft; this has now been reduced to them needing only one or two sets of stairs.” Derek relates that all of his units now have the ability to incorporate a solar panel that can be used to charge the batteries that power the lighting system. And the Future?
