BY ALAN ORBELL SELLING Long Haul is pleased to have signed up as a sponsor of the World Responsible Tourism Awards 2013, joining the awards’ main sponsor, the Oman Ministry of Tourism. The World Responsible Tourism Awards
were founded in 2004 to ‘surprise and inspire’
tourists and the tourism industry
at large by selecting the best of the best in responsible tourism – that is, tourism products that help to create better places to live in and visit. The awards celebrate the shining stars
of responsible tourism: those individuals, organisations and destinations working innovatively
with local cultures, communities and embracing biodiversity.
The nominees are selected by travellers and the travel and tourism industry who can nominate those tourism
ventures with exciting
stories to share – and this is what makes the awards unique. Also, unlike some other annual awards events, the winners are not pre- determined
or selected with
commercial considerations in mind. All it takes for someone to be a potential award-winner is a nomination in any one of the nine categories. Agents still have time to niminate – just. So cast your votes today by

THE 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Empress of Ireland near Sainte-Luce- sur-Mer in Québec will be commemorated on May 29, 2014. There will be a series of commemorative events and a special
exhibition at the Museum of Civilization in Gatineau, where the most comprehensive collection of artefacts and archival material related to the tragedy can be found.
