Rebecca Turner is a recently-graduated English artist whose paper
work Dumbstruck challenges perception. “It’s a huge grey sphere, a great big ball and it’s suspended halfway up a wall,” Rebecca says. “It looks like a kind of huge concrete ball, so what you think of initially is ‘hey, how is that thing defying gravity?’ It’s paper, but she has managed through some process of alchemy to make it seem like this weighty object. It’s a really striking piece.” And then there’s another American artist, Jessica Jackson Hutchins, and the Saatchi Gallery is showing one of her works, a huge multimedia piece featuring a couch covered in newspaper.
“The whole thing is encased in the reading material that we would normally be browsing as we sit on the sofa,” says Rebecca. “That’s a fantastic piece.”
She adds: “Paper is a medium that we all have lots of feelings about. It’s the medium through which information is transferred. We document things in diaries, we read books, we read newspapers… so to see it used by these artists in really, really exciting and different ways will be a lot of fun, and quite a revelation as well.”
