The pieces she bought on the latest series of the show include an early hologram and “roadkill couture” wearable sculptures. “I don’t know what the other dealers saw, but from our point of
view, there was some good stuff,” she says, reflecting on the recent series. “Gordon [Watson, a rival dealer on the show] took a couple of bits away from me that I wasn’t very happy about, but that’s another story.”
Celia suggests people starting a collection should look at investing in work by up-and-coming artists. Two she has her eye on are Michael Forbes – “who is really clever, and his art’s quite interesting, quite controversial” – and Ed Chapman, who creates mosaics. “I’ve got a Clint Eastwood of his,” she adds.
She says she usually buys things with a client in mind, but sometimes she wants the piece for herself.
“I’d say 80 to 85 per cent of the time I’ve got someone in mind, and the rest of the time I’m thinking about myself, what I like, because I also like nice pieces. For instance, this roadkill stuff that I’ve bought, I want to keep it for myself for now. “It doesn’t mean I won’t sell it on, because obviously that’s part of the deal, but I’m not going to sell it yet – I’m enjoying it.” Sometimes she sells things and then regrets it, as in the case of a piece of Scott Campbell artwork made out of dollar bills, which she bought with someone in mind. She found it difficult to part with, but went ahead with the sale. “That’s really upset me actually because I wish I’d kept it now,” she says. “I was too greedy, it’s my own fault. I should have kept it, because

I think he’s going to appreciate even more. But there you go. There’s always another deal around the corner, always something else.” And that seems to sum up the determination and energy she puts into her work – she’s always looking for something else to invest in, another way to expand her business, another deal. “It can be tough, and the days are long, but it’s all worth it in the end, and I enjoy it. Otherwise I wouldn’t do it,” she says.
