CHARITY

work with us to come up with a programme or a project, or something like that, that they will achieve if they get the grant.” It means that the process is driven by the donors, and the charities will respond with something relevant to them. The foundation has also helped set up new charities in the borough, including theatre group Chickenshed K&C, and SOS, which helps rehabilitate ex-offenders. Jeremy explains: “Where we think there are local needs that are not being well met, we will help to do something about it.” It’s been a big year for the foundation. It was chosen as the charity partner for Chelsea in Bloom, and Jeremy won the Mayor’s Award for “services to the community in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, his work with the voluntary sector and particularly as founder and director of the Kensington and Chelsea Foundation”. He is characteristically modest about it. “I think it was not just a recognition of me but of the work the foundation has done. I think that we have made quite an impact on the local scene and we’ve achieved some good results in terms of helping local charities, so it was very nice that the mayor recognised that.” With the charity gaining momentum, Jeremy decided to hand its running to someone he hopes will take it to the next stage. Diana Spiegelberg, who previously worked for live music producers Serious, recently took over as director, and Jeremy has become a trustee. He explains: “My objective when I started was to set it up, prove the model and get the charity to a point where it could attract somebody really good to take it forward. I think we’ve reached that now.” Jeremy says that anything you can donate, whether £10 or £10,000, makes a difference. And if individuals or companies can donate their time or skills, that also can be of “tremendous value” to local charities. “We find people are interested not just in giving money but doing local work. That could range from helping at an event to becoming a trustee of a local organisation,” says Jeremy. “And local charities need that sort of strategic help… We help facilitate that type of relationship.” For more information, visit www.thekandcfoundation.com.
