Novosibirsk
The largest city in Siberia is host to the headquarters of numerous Russian companies. Its large industrial base covers the electricity, gas and mechanical engineering sectors. From Heathrow, Aeroflot flies thrice-daily
to Moscow and has onward services to Novosibirsk, while Transaero’s double-daily departures to the Russian capital also connect with flights to the city.
Yekaterinburg An important junction on the Trans-Siberian Railway, Yekaterinburg has an economy based on the machinery, metal processing, and ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy industries. Transaero and Aeroflot serve Yekaterinburg
from Heathrow via Moscow, flying twice-daily and three times a day respectively. Finnair flies from Helsinki and Lufthansa from Frankfurt.
Nizhny Novogorod On the Volga River, Nizhny has become one of the Russian Federation’s most important centres for the IT industry, stimulated by some 25 R&D institutions. There are no direct flights from the UK to Nizhny, but Aeroflot flies from Heathrow three times a day via Moscow. Alternatively, Lufthansa offers five non-stop services a week out of its Frankfurt hub.
India Mumbai
The financial and commercial capital of India, Mumbai handles 70 per cent of the subcon- tinent’s trade though its port, while Bollywood is the centre of the Hindi movie business. From Heathrow, British Airways flies to Mumbai 12 times a week, Jet Airways twice- daily, and Virgin Atlantic and Air India daily. The city is served from their European hubs by Brussels Airlines, Air France and Lufthansa, and from the Gulf by Qatar Airways, Gulf Air, Etihad, Emirates and Oman Air.
Delhi Incorporating India’s capital of New Delhi, the city has one of the world’s fastest- growing economies. Hotels, IT and
telecommunications companies are important in servicing the government. From Heathrow, British Airways flies to Delhi
13 times a week, Air India twice-daily, and Jet Airways and Virgin Atlantic daily. Flights to Delhi from their European bases are provided by Brussels Airlines, Aeroflot, Lufthansa, Finnair, Air France and KLM, and from the Gulf by all the region’s carriers.
Bangalore Known as India’s Silicon Valley for the spread of companies engaged in the computer software, aerospace and telecoms sectors, Bangalore is also strong in biotechnology. BA flies direct from Heathrow to Bangalore
daily. Air France has six services a week from Paris CDG, and Lufthansa a daily frequency ex Frankfurt. Qatar Airways and Oman Air serve the city from Doha and Muscat respectively, and Emirates flies thrice-daily ex Dubai.
Kolkata
Located in north east India, Kolkata is a major banking and financial centre, with other industries including steel, mining, minerals, cement, pharmaceuticals and electronics. Air India departs Heathrow twice-daily for
Kolkata, flying via Delhi, or travel with Jet Airways to Mumbai or Delhi and onward on its Jet Connect services. Emirates serves Kolkata twice-daily from Dubai, and Qatar Airways flies daily out of Doha.
